Settlers Fall in Elimination Game; Take Runner-Up

Licking County posted another valiant comeback effort, but for the second night in a row, the Settlers fell short of the Hamilton Joes in the GLSCL Tournament Championship series, as the Joes captured the 2010 Tournament title with a 7-5 win.

An Adam Walker (Jacksonville University) two-run home run coupled with a Jordan Sivertsen (Southern Illinois University) RBI single brought Licking County to within one run late a 6-5, but the Settlers could never come all the way back for the win.  Another hit parade by the Joes kept the Settlers at bay the entire evening.

Licking County matched Hamilton step for step early in the game as the teams exchanged runs in the first three innings.  Then, the Joes took the lead for good against starting pitcher Matt Reed (University of South Florida) (3-1) in the fourth.

A three run rally in the eighth inning gave the Settlers hope, but the Joes tacked on insurance in the top of the ninth and held on for the win.

The Licking County Settlers do not leave the 2010 season empty-handed as they captured the organization's first GLSCL pennant with a 29-11 regular season record.  Six players finished on the All-GLSCL teams at the end of the season and LC finished with a final record of 31-13.  Organization records were posted, both individually and as a team, in virtually every major offensive category while John McCambridge (Xavier University) was named Player of the Year, Walker was Position Prospect of the Year, and manager Brian Meyer was named Manager of the Year.

The Settlers organization would like to thank all the individuals who helped make the 2010 season an unparalleled success, and hope that the summer of 2011 will provide just as much excitement.

Joes Outslug Settlers; Take Game One

Licking County fell behind early and could never recover in an 11-6 loss to the Hamilton Joes in game one of the best-of-three GLSCL Championship series from Foundation Field in Hamilton.  The Joes pounded 18 hits against Settlers pitching in the victory to move within one win of the  tournament title.

The Settlers mounted a six run rally in the middle innings to cut a 9-0 defecit to 9-6, but could never fully recover from the early damage.  The Joes scored in each of the first four innings against Ryan Mace (Kent State University) (3-1) and Bobby Lyne (Furman University) to run away with the lead.  Lyne went his longest outing of the year, 5.2 innings, striking out five and allowing five runs.

Meanwhile, the Settlers offense took five innings to get going, with David Schwabe (University of St. Francis (IL)) jumpstarting the attack with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with two walks.  Dan Gulbransen (Jacksonville University) and Adam Walker (Jacksonville University) both homered, the latter home run bringing the Settlers within three.

Michael Franklin picked up the win for the Joes, while every starter had at least one hit on the night.

Licking County now faces a return home, where they must now capture two wins on Saturday and Sunday to come from behind.  The Navy and Red take on Hamilton on Saturday at 7 p.m. from Denison University.  The game can be found right here on settlersbaseball.com.  Click here to catch all the action live beginning at 6:50 p.m.

Settlers Oust Cows in Doubleheader Sweep; Advance to Finals

Licking County made the most of their semifinal doubleheader against the Delaware Cows, sweeping the visitors 7-3 and 5-3 to eliminate Delaware from the postseason and propel the Settlers to the GLSCL Championship series.  Licking County rallied from two run defecits in both contests to earn the right to play Hamilton in the best-of-three series to determine the GLSCL Tournament champion.

In game one, Licking County rode a steadying performance from Brent Choban (Ohio University) (5-2) who overcame early trouble to work through five innings and earn the win.  Choban fanned five in the effort and allowed six hits, four of which began his outing.  Kaleb Engleke (UW-Milwaukee) tallied the final six outs to earn his first save as a Settler.

At the plate, Licking County took charge in the middle innings thanks to the middle of the order, where Chris Dudics (University of Toledo) notched a pair of hits to set the table for a pair of 3-for-4 days from Adam Walker (Jacksonville University) and Tyler Wynn (Cleveland State University).  Walker added a pair of runs and two RBI's while Wynn scored twice and drove in three of his own.  Dan Gulbransen (Jacksonville University) added his own touches, driving in two for the Navy and Red.

In the second meeting, Licking County again saw themselves fall behind early to the Cows, only to punch across runs in the third and fourth to take the lead for good.  Albeit no individual had more than one hit, John McCambridge (Xavier University) reached safely four times, scored once and drove in a run.

On the mound, Jon Gulbransen (Valparaiso University) (4-1) picked up the win while scattering seven Cow hits and striking out five in five innings of work.  Licking County was outhit in the nightcap, but were opportunistic at the plate in their limited chances.  Jake Naumann (University of Evansville) worked 2.2 innings, giving up a lone run on two hits before Andrew Austin (Kennesaw State University) came on for his ninth save of the season, and his first four-out save on the campaign.

Licking County improves to 31-11 this season and advance to take on Hamilton, who swept Southern Ohio 6-2 and 9-8 in their semifinal series.  The Joes and Settlers will open up the Championship series from Foundation Field in Hamilton at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, August 6th.  Both teams venture for their first league tournament title.
